New Ulm Homes for Sale

New Ulm is an unincorporated community in Austin County and home to less than 1000 people. It’s just 22 miles southwest of Belleville, 16 miles northeast of Columbus, and about two hours due west of downtown Houston.

This is one of the premier German settlements in Texas with a lot of rich history dating back to the 1920s. The original settlers were Anglo-American who sold out to eager German buyers who arrive literally by the boatloads in the 1840s and 50s. It’s funny to think that in 1930 the population was at 500 and today it is less than 700. This is not been a fast growing community by any stretch of the imagination, and the residents like it just for that reason. In many respects, New Ulm doesn’t look like it’s changed in the last 50 years but there are several higher-end homes and new construction communities popping up around the downtown area. You can find old farmhouses for around $250,000, larger estates, ranches, smaller single-family homes in downtown, and enormous custom homes. There’s quite a range of prices and styles to choose from.

Why choose New Ulm?

Well, if you haven’t figured it out already, you choose New Ulm because of its solidarity and tranquility. They do have a few original buildings, a volunteer fire station, a post office, radio station, and it’s part of the Columbus Independent School District. There is not even one stoplight in this tiny little Texas Hill Country town.
